Motorcycle riders should make sure they have health and life insurance policies in place regardless of age. Risky behaviors and hobbies may result in an unexpected death. Purchasing an insurance policy is a smart move to ensure beneficiaries will be financially stable.

The death rate in the U.S. for motorcyclists 65 years or older increased by 145 percent between 2000 and 2006, according to a study published by Injury Prevention. Another study reveals that riders over age 40 had a higher risk of succumbing to motorcyclist injuries and fatalities than those under 40 years old, the Boston Globe reports.

Data shows that the number of motorcyclist accidents increased from 66,354 in 1995 to 119,980 in 2007, according to reports from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“We’re not saying that motorcyclists aren’t safe or that people shouldn’t ride motorcycles,” University of Rochester Medical Center trauma director, Dr. Mark Gestring, tells the Globe. “We are just saying, if you get injured and you are older, the consequences are higher,” Gestring said.

Motorcyclists are very proud of their motorcycles and the lifestyle. Motorcycling can be a very enjoyable means of transportation. Just be sure you know the types of insurance for motorcyclists and be prepared.
