The Surprising Reality Of Tanning Beds

The New York City Board of Health adopted new indoor tanning regulations on December 13, 2013, which will continue to strengthen existing rules while also educating the community about the harmful effects of UV exposure.

The Board unanimously adopted new rules requiring clearer warning labels about the dangers of indoor tanning, as well as routine inspections of tanning facilities to ensure that tanning devices operate within the ultraviolet range limits permitted by the US Food and Drug Administration.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AADA) applauds the board’s decision and believes the city is on the right track.

“New York City’s commitment to the fight against skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is commendable,” said board-certified dermatologist Dirk M. Elston, MD, FAAD, president of the AADA. “The city’s willingness to strengthen their existing regulations exemplifies a true commitment to protecting the public from the dangers of indoor tanning.”

In 2012, New York State passed legislation prohibiting minors 16 and under from using indoor tanning beds and requiring 17-year-olds to obtain parental consent.

The new NYC regulations will enforce this state law while also launching a public education campaign about the dangers of UV exposure.

Every year, more than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed. One in every five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime, with more than 4,000 new cases of melanoma diagnosed in New York State in 2013.

According to studies, those who have been exposed to UV radiation from indoor tanning have a 75% increased risk of melanoma, and the risk increases with each use.

While prevention is key when it comes to skin cancer, precautionary measures should still be taken in the event that something does happen. Taking out a life insurance policy, which can financially protect one’s family if a condition develops, is a simple yet effective approach.

Life insurance rates are currently at an all-time low in the industry, making it even easier to obtain a policy.
