With the arrival of fall, many coastal residents may not be thinking about hurricanes or tropical storms.
However, the Insurance Information Institute, an industry data source, recently reminded consumers that the hurricane season lasts until November 30. According to the organization, there are several steps homeowners can take to ensure they are prepared.
According to the III, standard home insurance policies will cover damage from a hurricane or tropical storm winds. Flood insurance, on the other hand, must be purchased through a national program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The National Flood Insurance Program, which recently received a year-long extension from the government, provides that protection. Some lawmakers and industry advocates, however, argue that a longer timeframe must be approved by legislators.
Meanwhile, the III recommends that consumers have enough home insurance coverage to rebuild their home and replace their belongings. Additionally, having an inventory of belongings prepared ahead of time can aid in the claims process.
People should also prepare an escape plan in case a hurricane or tropical storm strikes.
