Excessive Sun Exposure And Skin Cancer

While it could be temping to head outdoors without putting on sunblock, the long term effects of excessive sun exposure could leave lasting impressions for years to come or could even cause skin cancer.

If you’re planning to stay outside for an extended period of time, it is extremely important to apply sunblock throughout the day.

Thousands of people are diagnosed with skin cancer ever year, but many of these cases can be avoided. The American Cancer Society says more than 5.4 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed each year.

Cancer of the skin is by far the most common of all cancers. Melanoma accounts for only about 1% of skin cancers but causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths.

In fact, the American Cancer Society have a skin cancer fact sheet available on their website.

Fortunately, experts say people don’t have to hide indoors. With proper preparedness and precautionary steps, people can avoid this deadly disease without disrupting their daily lives.

“Beach and pool activities can be enjoyed safely as long as people take some extra precautions,” says the Skin Cancer Foundation president Dr. Perry Robins.

Extra precautions include trying to avoid the sun during its most intense hours, which are between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If a full day in the sun is planned, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that people take “shade breaks” when possible.

Taking care of one’s self can help people be more healthy and lead to lower life insurance premiums.

Also keep in mind that life insurance rates are currently at an industry all-time low, which makes getting coverage even more affordable.
