The United States Fire Administration released a report consisting of the safest ways to cook on barbecue and charcoal grills.
The location of a barbecue grill is important, which is why the report recommends positioning it away from a situation where sliding is not possible, says the report. In addition, the grill is safest when it is away from overhanging branches and where there can be a lot of foot traffic. Children and pets are better off at least 3 feet away from the radius of the cooking source. Also, remove any fat or grease build-up from the tray because it may catch fire.
As for charcoal grills, the report recommends using the proper starter fluid, which is best if it is out of reach from children and heat sources. Furthermore, do not add fluid when the coals have been ignited, as it may ignite a flame that is larger than expected. The USFA noted cooking equipment is the leading cause of unreported fires and associated injuries
Other tips include making sure you own a fire extinguisher, cleaning your grill from grease that builds up over time which also includes smokers and using marinades for grilled meat if you cook a lot can reduce cancer risks.
Homeowners that do cook and grill a lot throughout the year should follow these tips to help ensure their properties and families are accounted for. A tragic situation may happen, which is why life insurance is important because it provides financial funding during a time of need.
