The XL Group consists of two primary business segments that involve large groups of subsidiaries that offer insurance and reinsurance on a global scale. The company was founded as the EXEL Group in 1986 by 68 of the world’s largest corporations as a response to a shortage of U.S. liability insurance. The company recently changed its name in July of 2010 from XL Capital Ltd. As of 2009, the XL Group had $45.6 billion in total assets.
A.M. Best recently gave the XL Group an “A” rating for financial strength. Additionally, each of the companies under the XL Insurance and XL Reinsurance families received “A” ratings.
