Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) was founded to help stop “economic euthanasia,” or the killing of animals because people are unable to provide food and healthcare for their pets. Today, VPI offers a variety of health protection and wellness plans for dogs, cats, birds, and other exotic pets that include potbelly pigs, rabbits, and ferrets. Currently, the company has nearly half a million policyholders.
The company was founded in 1980. Since it’s inception, the company had paid out over $300 million in claims.
The VPI Hambone award is given to the strangest insurance claim of the year. Some of the most unusual insurance claims include Ellie, a Labrador Retriever who ate an entire beehive; Lulu, an English Bulldog who ate 15 baby pacifiers; and Rock, a Labrador Retriever who ate 23 packages of instant breakfast shake.
VPI Pet Insurance spearheads the “That’s a Good Human” campaign on its website. The campaign allows visitors to take a “vow” that they will properly care for their pet. They are then able to vote for one of four favorite animal charities. When the charity receives 5,000 votes, VPI donates $1,000 to the charity.
