Started in 1946 by a group of farmers as a farming club, the Shelter Insurance now offers protection for your home, life, car, farm and business.

The Shelter Insurance group of companies includes Shelter Mutual Insurance, Shelter General Insurance, Shelter Life Insurance, Shelter Reinsurance Company, and Shelter Financial Bank, with about 2,000 combined employees.

A unique feature of Shelter’s corporate center is the Shelter Insurance gardens, which contain 300 varieties of trees and shrubs and more than 15,000 annuals and perennials. The gardens are open daily to students, visitors, local residents and as a venue for small events. Features of the gardens include a rock garden, a replica 19th century one-room schoolhouse, and a garden for the blind.

A Shelter Insurance Almanac is offered free of charge by local Shelter agents. Introduced in 1950, the almanac offers tips about weather, gardening, cooking and family recipes submitted by Shelter employees.
