In the 1920s, General store owner Daniel L.B. Smith loaned a horse and carriage to an insurance agent. When the horse ran away and wrecked the carriage, Smith refused to take any payment. When the agent moved from the area, he gave Smith policy papers for farms and homes he had insured through his agency, which then became the D.L.B. Smith Agency. That agency would later became the Selective Insurance Group.
Today, Selective is primarily a holding company for seven property and casualty companies. They offer grants to non-profit organizations, paid time to employees for volunteer work, sponsor community safety programs, and make environmentally conscious business decisions by “going green.”
Selective is listed at number 993 on the 2010 Fortune 1000 list. Rankings are based on 2009 revenues.
