Some quick facts about SBLI:
SBLI, short for Savings Bank Life Insurance Company of Massachusetts, was founded in 1907 by Boston attorney and Associate Justice of the United States Louis Dembitz Brandeis. He was responsible for establishing a savings bank that could issue life insurance at a low cost to policyholders. Brandeis was also responsible for drafting and initiating the “Chapter 561 of the Acts of 1907, an Act Permitting Savings Banks Incorporated Under the Laws of Massachusetts to Establish Departments for the Issue of Life Insurance and Annuities” when he was a Supreme Court Justice, which allowed the average worker the opportunity to afford life insurance.
In 1964, SBLI reached the $1 billion dollar mark in life insurance.
In 2000, SBLI reported assets of $1.3 billion.
In 2003, SBLI had reached the $50 billion in life insurance.
