Proper diet and exercise are essential for leading a long and healthy life – but other factors, such as good respiratory health, can also play a significant role in one’s well-being.
Chronic respiratory disease (CRD) is the term used for diseases of the respiratory system, which are one of the leading causes of illness and death in the United States. Some of the more common respiratory conditions are lung disease, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and upper and lower respiratory tract infection.
Currently, in the United States, more than 23 million people have asthma and approximately 13.6 million adults have been diagnosed with COPD with an equal number of individuals who have yet be diagnosed.
These conditions affect the airways and overall structure of one’s lungs, which continue to affect millions of people everyday.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, women are more likely than men to be diagnosed with asthma while both have an equal chance of developing emphysema – one of the several types of COPD.
Respiratory conditions are more commonly found in the following high-risk groups:
· Elderly (individuals 65 and older)
· Lower income levels
· Employees exposed to certain workplace conditions
Fortunately there are specific methods of prevention, detection, and treatments that may reduce the risk of accelerating or developing respiratory diseases.
· Quit smoking
· Avoid breathing in harmful chemicals and toxicants
· Eat a well-balanced diet
· Keep your house clean and free of any excess dust
· Develop an exercise routine
· Seek out medical assistance if conditions worsen
Respiratory conditions can cause substantial damages to one’s lungs over time while also causing a shortness of breath and wheezing. Preventable respiratory diseases can lead to premature death, which can have substantial economic effects on families, communities and societies in general.
While most respiratory diseases are preventable, individuals can still develop such conditions based on family history and certain demographics. With this being said, taking out a life insurance policy can insure the financial security of one’s family.
Life insurance policies are currently at an industry all-time low, so please contact your insurance adviser for more information.
