The Prudential Friendly Society was founded in 1875 in a basement office in Newark, N.J. and was the first U.S. company to make life insurance available to the working class. The first insurance sold provided funeral and burial expenses for low-income families, with some premiums as low as three cents per week.
Ten years after its inception, the one-millionth policy was sold and the company was renamed “The Prudential Insurance Company of America.” The Rock of Gibraltar was later adopted as the company symbol, which is still used today.
Prudential ranks #65 on the 2010 Fortune 500 list, and currently offers global coverage including–but not limited to–life insurance, annuities, mutual funds, investment management and retirement related services.
