Physicians Mutual Insurance Company began in 1902 when Edwin E. Elliott began offering health insurance solely to medial professionals. The company continued to be family-run, and had a board of directors comprised of physicians and surgeons. In 1962, health insurance was offered to all Americans who liked the idea of a mutual insurance company.

In 1970, life insurance coverage was added by the creation of Physicians Life Insurance Company. Today, the Physicians Mutual companies provide health and life insurance products that include Medicare supplements, life insurance, dental insurance, long-term care coverage and annuities.
