Pacific Life Insurance, founded in 1868, offers life insurance, annuities, mutual funds and various products for businesses.
In 1906, a 48-second earthquake destroyed San Francisco, sparing the then-home office of Pacific Life. However, the building soon caught fire, and an employee by the name of Richard Mier soon realized that the bonds were in a safe that was not fireproof.
Mier quickly grabbed the bonds and several stock ledgers, ran down five flights of shaking stairs, and buried them in the basement of his house at the top of Sacramento Street until they were needed.
The company’s icon has been the humpback whale since 1997, symbolizing the Pacific Life Foundation’s contributions in preserving marine mammals and improving ocean health.
