MetLife is the largest life insurer in the United States and offers a variety of non-medical insurance lines including dental, disability, and long-term care. MetLife was founded in 1863 as the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company, which insured soldiers during the Civil War against injury. Following the war, it became the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1868 and began selling various types of insurances to the general public.
MetLife has several creative ways in which it has advertised itself. The company has used the Peanuts character, Snoopy, as its corporate mascot since 1980 and has also featured other characters from the popular comic strip. Additionally, MetLife owns two iconic blimps, Snoopy 1 and Snoopy 2, one of which can be seen flying overhead at various major sporting events.
In 1980, MetLife completed the largest individual building purcahse in history when it bought the Pan Am Building in New York City. It was also the largest private supporter of the Allied war efforts in World War Two.
