After the 1990 contract killing of her husband, Barbara Kogan plead guilty to hiring a hitman to murder her husband outside of his girlfriend’s penthouse apartment, subsequently leaving his $4.3 million life insurance policy in her hands, the Associated Press reports.
Kogan was charged with her husband’s murder two years ago, but plead guilty on Thursday to first-degree manslaughter, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and grand larceny, reports the AP. At the time of Kogan’s murder, he and his wife were going through a bitter divorce process. Mrs. Kogan admitted to hiring the hitman through her attorney.
Kogan’s attorney, Manuel Martinez, is currently serving a sentence of 25 years to life for his role in the murder, the AP reports.
Life insurance policyholders going through a divorce or other life events in which beneficiary information changes should update their policies as soon as possible. Life insurance policies are non-probate assets, meaning that the beneficiary listed on the policy will receive the benefits, even if the policyholder’s will dictates otherwise.
