- Survival of Chilean miners highlights dangerous nature of mine work

- The discovery earlier this month that 33 Chilean miners had miraculously survived a catastrophic collapse in a gold and copper mine north of Santiago was greeted with joy by their friends and relatives, but the odds of surviving such an event are remote.
The miners are now expected to have to weather a delay of several months while rescue personnel reach them through half a mile of rock and debris. National Public Radio reports that NASA has been called in to lend their expertise in both escape technology and living in cramped conditions to aid the trapped men.

- Senior executives at Massey Energy - owners of the Upper Big Branch coal mine that made national news earlier this year after an explosion that killed nearly 30 workers - will soon be subpoenaed by lawyers from the Department of Labor.

- Coal mining accident highlights dangers involved in mining industry

- The death toll in Monday's coal mining accident has risen to 25 as authorities continue to drill ventilating holes and bulldoze a path to the mining area. Rescue crews were forced to call off rescue efforts for the remaining four miners due to the risk imposed by toxic levels of methane and carbon dioxide.
