The best auto insurance policy in the world offers little financial protection for families in the event of a tragedy on the road. With that in mind, carrying proper life insurance coverage should be seen as equally important.
Auto safety has been gaining a significant share of news attention due to the Toyota safety recalls, the ensuing congressional hearings in Washington and what is likely to be a growing number of lawsuits.
However, a recent report from Edmunds.com says driver inattention and error tend to be far greater safety threats than faulty vehicles – and that efforts to ban texting and cell phone use behind the wheel are likely to help reduce fatalities in the longer term.
“While recalls make for compelling headlines, in truth the defects affect a remarkably small percentage of car owners,” says Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl, adding that distraction and error tend to cause the most car collisions.
According to the automotive website, in 2008 there were 192 fatalities per 100,000 vehicles sold, as well as 328 complaints per 100,000 vehicles sold. These numbers remained fairly consistent throughout the past decade, with 2001 seeing 187 fatalities per 100,000 vehicles sold.
