A Beaumont, Texas, motorcyclist nearly died last month when he suffered a serious accident near the town’s Satwater Barrier, according to the town’s Enterprise newspaper.
Fortunately for Lane Tippet, 19, his life was saved by Coast Guardsman Jose Blanco, who prevented Tippet from bleeding to death through a grievous leg wound, the paper reports. But rather than any extensive medical training Blanco received in the Coast Guard, he credits a poster displayed in the bathroom at his workplace – which detailed the body’s major arteries and the places one should apply pressure to stop blood flow – for his ability to save Tippet’s life.
“I remember thinking about that picture while I sat there holding his thigh,” Blanco told the Enterprise.
However, motorcyclists cannot count on quick-witted military personnel to save them if they get into a major accident. It’s a dangerous way to get around, and those who ride regularly should look into a life insurance policy to protect themselves and their families from the financial consequences that result from a tragic accident, experts say.
