It might not seem like working in retail comes with many hazards, but that’s sometimes the case.
The risk of retail truly comes when workers are on the late or overnight shift, according to a report in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, citing statistics from OSHA. There were 167 retail workers killed on the job nationwide in 2007, and of those, 39 were at convenience stores, 32 were at gas stations, and seven were at liquor stores.
The report said that homicide was the leading cause of death for retail workers who died on the job, making up 58 percent of those deaths in 2008. Homicide was the cause of death in 33 percent of law enforcement workers the same year.
The incidence of nonfatal assaults was also high for retail workers, the report said. An average of 54 of every 1,000 convenience store workers reported an aggravated assault on the job.
As a consequence of these dangers, it’s important for people with jobs that seem totally harmless to make it a point to purchase a life insurance policy, which will help provide for their loved ones in the event of an unforeseen fatality.
