One important reason to protect your family with life insurance is the risk of accidents and unexpected injuries that people face everyday, especially traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

Each year, TBIs contribute to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability. A TBI is caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. The severity of a TBI may range from “mild” to “severe”.

In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that at least 1.7 million TBIs occur each year as either an isolated incident or in conjunction with another injury.

TBI is a contributing factor to a third of all injury-related deaths in the United States. It is estimated that 52,000 people per year die from TBIs while 275,000 people are hospitalized.

The leading causes of TBI are:

    · Falls (32.5%)

    · Motor vehicle or traffic accidents (17.3%)

    · Struck by/against events (16.5%)

    · Assaults (10%)

The CDC notes that adults over the age of 65; teens between 15 and 19; and children aged 0 to 4 are among the most at-risk to suffer a TBI. In every age group, TBI rates are higher for males than females.

Since accidents can happen to people of any age or health, it is strongly advised to take out a life insurance policy to protect one’s family if something were to happen. Fortunately, life insurance rates are at an industry all-time low, which makes getting a policy even easier.
