According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of all cervical cancer diagnoses are made during the last stages of the disease. Once the condition has spread, successfully battling the disease will become more difficult.

Fortunately, like some other forms of cancer, there are actions people can take to reduce their likelihood of being diagnosed with cervical cancer. There are two methods to help prevent cervical cancer – the Pap test and human papillomavirus (HPV).

The Pap test looks for any precancerous cells that may develop into cervical cancer. It is recommended to start getting Pap tests at the age of 21. If your test results are normal, your chances of getting cervical cancer in the next few years are relatively low. Regardless of your results and age, you should still go to the doctor for regular checkups.

Once you are 30 years or older, you should also get the HPV test. This test looks for the virus that could cause cell changes that may lead to cancer.

There are multiple methods that can be used to treat cervical cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are among the most frequently used measures to combat the disease. It is best for patients to discuss all of their options with their doctor to determine which form of treatment makes the most sense given a person’s individual circumstances.

Authors of the report found that the typical female afflicted with cervical cancer was older than 50 and of Hispanic decent. Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Louisiana were among the states with the highest late-stage diagnosis rate.

Not only will taking appropriate actions to improve one’s well being result in better overall health, one may achieve better life insurance premiums as well. Those who are free of sickness are often rewarded with lower rates.
