Harleysville Insurance began in 1915 when Alvin Alderfer, concerned by local car theft, formed an association where members would contribute a small membership fee to a fund that would pay to recover to repair any members’ stolen cars.
What started as a membership with friends and neighbors grew quickly: A second company—Harleysville Mutual Casualty Company—was created in 1922 to insure homes and businesses. In 1933, that company merged with the Auto Theft Company, and the company’s name was changed to Harleysville Mutual Insurance Company in 1956. In 1960, Harleysville Life Insurance Company was established to offer life insurance and related financial services.
Once a Pennsylvania-based company, Harleysville Insurance is currently in 32 states and was ranked as one of the top 60 property/casualty insurance companies and groups according to A.M. Best Company.
