Key Officers: Vincent Duvall, President and CEO, Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; Treasurer and Corporate Secretary, Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; William Childs, First VP, Georgia Farm Bureau Federation.
The Georgia Farm Bureau was created in 1937 with 50 Georgia “dirt farmers” from 25 counties forming a farmer-led organization to support local agriculture. Since the very beginning, the organization has been a force in the legislative arena to promote the farming community as a grassroots organization.
But when farmers and rural Georgians were having a difficult time finding insurance, the Georgia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1959; two years later, Blue Cross-Blue Shield medical coverage became available to members. Today, it is the largest domestic property-casualty insurance company in the state.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Georgia’s 2007 census showed about 48,000 farms on more than 10 million acres across the state. Georgia is the nation’s top producer of peanuts (producing 1.6 billion pounds in 2007), chickens, pecans and watermelons. The state is also a top producer of cotton (one million acres grown in 2007), peaches, eggs, tobacco, tomatoes, onions, cantaloupes, cabbage and blueberries.
The Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance Companies includes the Georgia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company (a preferred risk writer of farm home, auto and light commercial insurance); and the Georgia Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company (standard risk writer of farm, home, auto, and light commercial insurance).
