Death is inevitable. That’s why most people have life insurance. It also can be unpredictable, indiscriminate, and in weird twists of fate, its cause can be so macabre, bizarre or ironic that you have to shake your head in amazement, or in some cases, laugh out loud.
Imagine the Grim Reaper coming in the form of a clumsy bird, a plant with a prickly personality or a toilet! We’ve combed through encyclopedias, old newspaper and wire stories, various Internet sites including torontoseeker.com, britannica.com and niagaratimes.com, and even an essay by a former congressman to come up with a list of some of the strangest and most ironic deaths. Be careful out there.
1. AN UNA(PEEL)ING DEATH
Bobby Leach was the first male to successfully take a barrel ride over treacherous Niagara Falls in July 1911, but he couldn’t survive a slippery banana peel, or maybe it was an orange peel, as some reports claim.
Either way, Leach slipped on a peel in 1926, his leg became infected and eventually gangrene necessitated the leg’s amputation. He died two months later.
2. CRASH COURSE
In an attempt to prove to his partners in a Toronto law firm that the glass in the Toronto-Dominion Center was unbreakable, lawyer Garry Hoy threw himself through a glass wall on the 24th story in 1993. He was proven wrong. Hoy fell to his death after the window frame gave way. He had apparently attempted the same stunt many times in the past, and bounced harmlessly off the glass.Pages: 1 2 3
